Norway and the Olympic games

In Norway we have a long tradition for participating in the Olympic games, and this big sport event is very popular in Norway. Norway has arranged the winter Olympics twice, the first time in 1952 in Oslo and the second time in 1994 in Lillehammer. Here we will present some of our Olympic stars.

Sonja Henie - the great figure skater

The winter Olympic was arranged for the very first time in Chamonix (France) in 1924. Sonja Henie was only twelve years old and the youngest participant, but some years later she became one of the greatest Olympic stars. In 1924 in Chamonix, Sonja Henie was not qualified to participate. Her father then paid for all her expenses and forced them to let Sonja participate. She didn’t do very well in the games. Four years later in 1928 in St. Maritz Sonja won a gold medal, and her success continued in Lake Placid in 1932. Now she became the queen of the Olympic games, and she founded her future career as a professional and as a Hollywood star.

Norway has not had any good figure skaters since Sonja Henie, but we hope that someday, we might have a new Sonja Henie.
